Former Gov. Mike Huckabee commuted the sentences or pardoned over a thousand criminals during his administrations, including that of Maurice Clemmons who went on to murder four policemen in 2009. But, should Barbour run for higher office he will need to take a refresher course on some of the essential rules executing a successful political career., including: not making decisions that leave one open to high-yield attacks from the opposition. Time will tell what the future holds for Barbour’s electoral career, but based on his tepid interest in running in for president in 2012, and the low probability that he would be attractive to voters outside the South, Barbour is more likely to spend the latter years of his career influencing politics behind the scenes as a lobbyist.
This is an area in which public officials need to demonstrate that they were especially scrupulous, and Barbour unnecessarily invited attacks on his decisions. As a strong conservative, he could have made it more feasible for other governors to issue pardons, but he ended up making the process more controversial.
